What is Transactional Analysis?
Transactional Analysis (TA) is a form of psychotherapy that offers many models to understand human behaviour. It first developed by Eric Berne in the 0s and 60s. Since then, it has grown immensely, and many new schools and approaches have been developed.
TA has its roots in psychoanalytic theory, which means it is especially interested in unconscious processes and how these impact individuals personally and within relationships.
Philosophically, it is considered a humanistic and existential approach, as it values each human's fundamental worth and believes in their to grow and change.
Berne was also interested in the behavioural sciences, and as a result, there is a focus within TA on behaviour change.
This combination of psychoanalytic history and behavioural emphasis, combined with a humanistic approach, leads to an approach that values deep processes and focuses on the power of therapeutic relationship.
