What is Transactional Analysis?

Transactional Analysis (TA) is a form of psychotherapy that offers a range of models for understanding human behaviour, relationships and the ways we relate to ourselves and others.

It was first developed by Eric Berne in the 1950s and 60s. Since then, TA has grown immensely, with many new schools and approaches developing from his original ideas.

Understanding Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy

TA has its roots in psychoanalytic theory, which means it is especially interested in unconscious processes and how these impact us personally and within our relationships. Philosophically, it is considered a humanistic and existential approach. It values each person’s fundamental worth and believes in our capacity to grow and change.

Berne was also interested in the behavioural sciences, and as a result there is a strong focus within TA on understanding behaviour and creating meaningful change.

This combination of psychoanalytic thinking, behavioural understanding and a humanistic perspective creates an approach that values deep processes and recognises the importance of the therapeutic relationship.

Transactional Analysis can be studied at different levels, from an initial introduction to comprehensive professional psychotherapy training.

At Somata, our Transactional Analysis psychotherapy training combines the theory and practice of TA with an embodied and relational approach to learning.

For those considering training, the TA101 provides an introduction to the key ideas and models within Transactional Analysis and is a good place to begin.

Those wishing to continue can move into our Foundation Year, followed by our clinical training programme.
