Accreditation of Prior Learning Route

Our Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) routes offer a way to recognise relevant previous learning and experience, helping you identify the most appropriate entry point into the training. This page outlines the different APL routes available, the requirements for each, and how to explore the pathway that best reflects your individual learning journey.

Previous Counselling, Coaching or Psychotherapy Training or Qualification

If you have a background in counselling, coaching or psychotherapy, with previous training or a professional qualification, but have not trained at a Transactional Analysis (TA) institute, this route offers a way to build on your existing experience while developing a solid foundation in TA.

If you have not yet attended a TA101, the first step would be to join this two day introductory weekend. After this you would complete the TA Foundation year, followed by either one or two years in our mixed clinical group, depending on your previous learning and experience.

If you currently practise within SCoPEd Column A or B and are thinking about your future professional development, this route may be particularly relevant. It offers an opportunity to work towards a Level 7 psychotherapy qualification aligned with SCoPEd Column C criteria, potentially broadening your professional options as the counselling and psychotherapy landscape continues to evolve.

Reasons To Considering Continuing Your Training at Somata

  • If you are already working as a therapist, but want to add TA and embodied practice into your tool box.

  • If your previous training puts you within SCoPEd Column A or B this route offers an opportunity to work towards a Level 7 psychotherapy qualification aligned with SCoPEd Column C criteria, potentially broadening your professional options as the counselling and psychotherapy landscape continues to evolve.

  • If you want to continue your professional development and once qualified use the title of psychotherapist.

  • If you are looking to become UKCP accredited.

If You Have Previous TA Training Experience

If you have previously trained at another Transactional Analysis (TA) institute, APL enables you to join Somata’s mixed clinical year group directly, without needing to repeat training you have already completed.

We will work with you to review your previous learning and experience, helping you identify the most appropriate point to rejoin the training and continue your journey towards qualification.

Why Continue Your Training With Somata?

  • Small training groups: each training group is between 6 - 12 people.

  • Training more tailored to each person: due to the small size, we are able to offer students more individualised support.

  • An embodied approach: we offer an unique training experience, viewing TA through an embodied lens.

  • Family friendly training structure: Most TA trainings take place across a whole weekend, but we recognise that this is not accessible to many, including those with families, or who are carers. Furthermore, we believe most people benefit from having a Sunday to rest after training.

  • High quality training: Somata are committed to delivering rigorous training, which results in theoretically grounded, personally robust psychotherapists, who are able to sit with another in a truly intimate and authentic encounter.

  • UKCP accredited course: Somata are in the process of becoming a UKATA registered training establishment and UKCP accredited training school.
